When we bought our house, our front yard was landscapped desert style, but our backyard was all dirt. It's definitely going to take time for what we want to do, but we got started. Over the weekend, the nearby nursery was having a huge sale trying to get rid of their tress, so everything was 50% off. We got 3 tress for a little over $500. Not a bad deal. All three tress have a growth of about 5-6 feet per year! Here's a few before and after shots.
We want to add a raised planter in each back corner, put some mini palm tress and a few plants and flowers and add a few lighs to add some drama. We also want to add another slab of concrete to our exsisting patio to double the size for our entertaining.

Those will look great! They'd look even better with a little grass between them! Is that the plan? If so, do yourself a favor and put in sprinklers first. We have yet to own a house with sprinklers. That's 4 years of watering with a plastic sprinkler on the end of a hose. What a pain.
You should post some photos of your house, too, since I never made it out to see it when I was there this summer. I'd love to see it!
